For this series, we started by unmaking a box.
We disassembled fruit and vegetable crates collected from local markets in Verona, sorted the component pieces by kind, and then refashioned them into a series of five large tapestries or hangings that we call “skins.”
These are maps, diagrams of a fortress wall flattened and suspended. The skin is the first line of defense, a physical barrier that, when healthy, can protect the body from infection, but it may be penetrated, too.
By transforming the crate, we seek to regenerate the flesh, the beaten and worn-down bones. We rebuild and reinforce the wood so that it functions again with a new purpose. Plus, it’s free.
